Ask Evie

Page 1 of In The Mood Magazine's comic of Evie, a cheeky devil gal with a halo, and her sidekick Belle, a bat-like character with boots and a flame head. Panel 1: Belle flies into Evie's balcony window with an envelope in hand. Evie looks annoyed, eating popcorn in a chair and watching something on her projector. Belle's speech bubble: "Yoo-hoo! We got mail! You know what that means! It's time for..." Text on projector: ASK EVIE. Panel 2: Evie turns back to Belle in her chair. Evie's speech bubble: "Ugh! What problems from the human world have you brought me today, Belle?" Panel 3: Belle clears her throat while holding the envelope in her hand. Belle's speech bubble: *AHEM* Panel 4: Belle reads from the letter. It says: "Dear Evie, my boyfriend and I can never agree on a movie to watch. His picks are always grim, super-serious car movies like "Drive" or "The Hitcher." I love a chase scene as much as the next film connoisseur, but would it kill these guys to crack a smile? Whenever I pick something with a little sex appeal, the lughead love of my life is asleep by the end of the opening credits! Every movie night turns into an endless doom scroll of streaming services. Evie, can you help us? Yours truly, Doomed Scroller."
Page 2 of In The Mood Magazine's comic of Evie. Panel 1: Evie shrugs her shoulders, smiling devilishly. Evie's speech bubble: "Dear writer - you and your boyfriend don't want to watch the same movies? Perhaps I could recommend a dating app?" Belle's speech bubble from out of frame: "NOT HELPFUL!" Panel 2: Evie holds her hands up to her temples, concentrating hard. Evie's speech bubbles: "Okay okay, hold your horses! I'm getting a vision - the answer to all your problems..." Pane l3: Evie's gesturing to her projector, which shows a scene out of A Clockwork Orange that depicts a man stuck to a chair with a contraption that keeps his eyes peeled open. Evie's speech bubble: "It's the chair from A Clockwork Orange! Perfect for a peaceful night of watching whatever you want!" Belle's speech bubble: "A truly horrifying suggestion!"
Page 3 of In The Mood Magazine's comic. Panel 1: Belle smiles, showing a mouth full of sharp teeth. Belle's speech bubble: "How is a torture chair gonna help anyone's relationship? What if they just compromised instead?" Evie's speech bubble from out of frame: "Ha! Compromise! What would you know about compromise?" Panel 2: Evie holds a dramatic hand to her forehead. Her halo is in the shape of a heart. Belle's speech bubble from out of frame: "Plenty! I"m constantly compromising my sanity by working with you!" Evie's speech bubble: "Oh har-de-har! Yuck it up while you can, queen of comedy - I'm getting another vision - the perfect marriage of car action and good vibes!" Panel 3: Evie gestures to her projector showing Belle a still from the movie 2 Fast 2 Furious. Evie's speech bubble: "Dear scroller, what you need is 2003's 2 Fast 2 Furious - John Singleton's ode to friendship and street racing! It features plenty of vehicular action - but unlike your partner's choices of car films, it's nothing but a good time! It's a movie full of sunny location and even sunnier smiles - just about the furthest thing from grim, with some sex appeal to boot!" Belle's speech bubble: "Okay, so it checks all the boxes - but is it any good?" Panel 4: Evie puts on a pair of sunglasses, while Belle sits in her bowl of popcorn, smiling. Evie's speech bubble: "Good? It's great! At the very least, it's better than doom scrolling all night! Plus, you might learn something about your own tastes in film - you know that old adage, "every movie is either like or unlike 2 Fast 2 Furious!" Belle's speech bubble: "Weird I've never heard that old adage before, but I guess it's not wrong! Good luck, dear reader!" Panel 5: Belle smiles in front of a mailbox that says In The Mood. Belle's speech bubble: "Do you have a film-related question for Evie? Send it to us at inthemoodmagazine@gmail.com and we''ll give it our best shot!" Credit: Art + Words by Aidan Jeans, 2021
